- This is a good link to the Crikey website, which gives a pretty thorough
breakdown of the economics of detention centres. Needless to say if detainees
were released into the community in accordance with the UN Convention and
given some financial support to the equivalent of the dole, the cost to the
government would be nearly half what it costs to lock them up in remote places.
