A Community Conversation with Refugees
20 May 2018 @ 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm
‘A Community Conversation with Refugees and People Seeking Protection in Australia’
Phillips Hall, Blackheath Community Centre, Great Western Highway, Blackheath
Sunday 20 May 2018 – 1:45 for 2:00pm start
Members are encouraged to attend this event – more importantly, you are encouraged to invite friends and acquaintances not so closely involved with the Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group.
A key goal of the Community Conversation is to change the hearts and minds of many in our Community – encouraging them to reflect on what drives their views in relation to refugees and people seeking asylum. Ideally, among those attending, we might see a shift across the ‘Spectrum of Allies’ – encouraging ‘passive opponents’ and ‘neutral’ people to become supportive and for ‘passive allies’ to become ‘active allies’ – like many BMRSG members
Features of the afternoon will include:
hearing the stories of two asylum seekers – one now living and working in the Upper Mountains;
a ‘refugee expert’, currently working in the sector, being on hand to answer questions that may arise; and
an Action Planning session – seeking input from the Community as to ‘where next’ – hopefully coming away from the afternoon with a definitive list of Actions for ongoing involvement.
To assist with planning and organisation, those planning attend are encouraged to register on line at www.bit.do/blackheath .
