ARAR and Progressive Cinema present
CHAUKA, PLEASE TELL US THE TIME
by Behrouz Boochani and Arash Kamali Sarvestani
I, DANIEL BLAKE
by Ken Loach
At the Armidale launch of his book “No Friend But the Mountains” Behrouz Boochani suggested we watch “Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time”, a film he shot on his mobile phone on Manus Island. During the discussion, Behrouz compared Australia’s treatment of asylum seekers and refugees to that of people in need of support in Australia — or in the UK — and recommended watching “I, Daniel Blake”. Both films expose the deliberate state sponsored cruelty towards vulnerable people who need and deserve support. They also expose the lies used to demonise them and distract from the real problems, such as homelessness or war and climate change which force people to flee in the first place. Following Behrouz’s suggestion, Armidale Rural Australians for Refugees and Progressive Cinema are screening both films
