Armidale – #SaveMedevac Vigil
November 10 @ 6:30 pm - November 11 @ 9:30 am
As you will know, the Medevac Bill (which enables doctors to recommend transfer of refugees/asylum seekers on Manus and Nauru for medical reasons) is under threat of repeal.
On Sunday 10th from 6.30pm, through to 9.30am on Monday, there will be vigils around the country – led by Rural Australians for Refugees, including outside Parliament House Canberra.
IN ARMIDALE WE WILL GATHER IN CENTRAL PARK next Sunday 10th at 6.30pm and will maintain a presence there until 9.30am on Monday morning.
People who are not able to be there for the whole 15 hours are urged to come for whatever periods they wish, especially the beginning and the end.
Please bring battery tea lights for a candlelight effect (no open flames of course), and if staying overnight, some warm clothes/sleeping bags.
It would be terrific if someone came with a guitar and a few songs for the evening.
The Medevac Bill, or the Urgent Medical Treatment Bill (UMT) is currently in force. This law is designed to ensure timely and life-saving medical care is provided to people in offshore detention.
But next week the Senate will vote on whether to repeal or maintain this legislation. We need to show our elected representatives that there is a groundswell of public support for this life saving process.
