Cities and Towns across Australia: Walk Together For Freedom
21 October 2017
Walk Together 2017
Saturday 21 October
As you know, Walk Together is the annual national celebration of Australia’s diversity, designed as a tangible expression of the welcoming, fair and compassionate society we are committed to building. Faced with unjust policies towards people seeking asylum, it is more important than ever for us to amplify the values of compassion and welcome. This is especially true for our friends who now face a looming and unreasonable October deadline to lodge their claims for temporary protection in Australia.
In its sixth year, and building on the success of the past, we hope to coordinate Walk Together in as many as 30 cities and regional centres in Australia. We will again involve celebrities, sports stars, political leaders from all parties to join thousands of everyday Australians to celebrate the diversity that makes our nation great.
Walk Together 2017 will be held on Saturday 21 October across the nation.
This year’s theme is: For Freedom
- Freedom to belong: We are walking to celebrate the contribution of those currently on temporary protection, to our community, and to call for a pathway to permanent residency and citizenship for them.
- Freedom to be yourself: We are walking to celebrate the freedom we enjoy in Australia to express our selves and to be equally able to contribute, regardless of our background, culture, religion, gender or sexuality.
- Freedom to hope: We are walking together in solidarity with those who have sought freedom from violence, war and oppression and who have had hopes destroyed by indefinite detention. We walk to seek justice and compassion for all.
Through Walk Together we hope to demonstrate to the wider community, that no matter where you come from or how, you are a valued member of the community who deserves respect and dignity.
I hope that you can join me and thousands of everyday Australians, at Walk Together 2017.
Walk Together is almost entirely run by volunteers, and we need your help to make this the biggest and best event yet.
