Come and enjoy a wonderful spread of high tea delights in the glorious Minerva Room at the Mechanics Institute while showing support for our Ballarat Tamil friends – Neil Para, his wife Sugaa and their three daughters, Nivash (aged 8), Kartie (6) and Niev (3).

Guests will be welcomed by Nivash and Kartie singing the national anthem followed by Michael Westlake’s atmospheric piano playing with an auction of local donated goods/services thrown in there too!

Our Tamil friends from Sri Lanka, have been living in Ballarat since September 2013 and are very appreciative of the local community that welcomes them here.  They have settled in exceptionally well and are loved and supported by many new friends they have made.

Neil and Sugaa are active members of the community and are both dedicated volunteers which they see as an opportunity to give something back.  Neil is excited to have recently completed his six month SES training and is now on the roster for emergency call outs.  Sugaa is enjoying her weekly voluntary work at Eureka Nursing Home where she assists residents while learning about aged care.

The three daughters see Ballarat as their home where they are thriving in the peace and security here.    Nivash and Kartie are excellent students at Black Hill Primary where they have many friends and enjoy their classes.

Anyone who knows the family will notice their gentle caring nature, not only with each other but also with their friends and community.  Neil Para says: “I like the people here. They are very friendly and very supportive with kind hearts.  We are settled well here in Ballarat where it is a peaceful life for us.”

Neil and Sugaa and the girls are at risk of being sent back to Sri Lanka where their safety is not guaranteed.  All Tamil asylum seekers who return are treated very harshly and there is well documented evidence of interrogation and torture taking place.

All money raised from this event will go towards legal costs to fund the  family’s case to help them stay in the safe environment that Ballarat provides.
