GUEST SPEAKERS will be Lorna Gillespie and Sister Brigid Arthur
Lorna Gillespie is a Migration Consultant providing migration assistance to local refugee community members. She sub contracts to Australian Migration Options (AMO) Adelaide owned by Libby Hogarth, long time refugee advocate. Lorna`s background is in project delivery, training and mentoring, primarily in the not for profit community services sector. She has extensive experience in working with Shepparton and Cobram new arrival community members in both settlement and health services. Lorna (and Ken) volunteered at a centre for young children in Madagascar, first building a cottage onsite then coordinating international volunteers, managing vocational training and goods donations.
Lorna will discuss the refugee experience as seen by a migration agent, explain terminology and introduce you to the work being done by other groups and organisations.
Brigid Arthur is one of the Coordinators of the Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP).
This Project has been serving people seeking protection in Australia for nearly sixteen years.
She is Deputy Chair of the Australian Churches Task Force on Refugees, member of the Board of the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre, member of No Business in Abuse and Love Makes a Way.
As part of BASP, Brigid visits both Melbourne Immigration Detention Centres – trying to help individual people there; work with people who are on Bridging visas in the community, arranging accommodation, legal help, food, employment and friendship for families and teaching English.
She also lobbies authorities around issues relating to asylum seekers and advocates for individual asylum seekers.
