Bendigo: Vigil for Faysal
13 January 2017 @ 5:30 pm - 7:00 pm
Vigil for Sudanese refugee Faysal Ishak Ahmed
Like the death of Hamid Khaziae and Reza Barati,
the death of the Sudanese refugee Faysal Ishak Ahmed was preventable.
Mr Ahmed had complained for around a year of ill-health, including long-standing heart problems. He also advised Border Force officials of a lack of treatment and medical attention by contracted health service provider IHMS.
More than 60 Manus refugees signed a complaint letter regarding IHMS’s failure to properly treat the refugee. On his last few visits to the IHMS clinic, Faysal was only seen by a clinic nurse, not a doctor.
Kurdish journalist and refugee Behrouz Boochani released a statement from Manus Island on December 24. He said
“Every day Faysal went to medical asking for help. They did not help him. A few days ago a nurse in IHMS told Faysal that he was fine and didn’t need medical treatment. Now we know he has died. The government and IHMS must know that they can not hide the truth and we in Manus prison are caring about our friend and will follow up and tell the truth to people of how the Australian government killed him.”
Sympathisers are welcome to attend their vigil and express their condolences to Mr Ahmed’s family, and censure of our government.
