Bentley (WA): Exhibition Opening: Refuge

11 February 2019 @ 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm

Curtin Vice-Chancellor, Professor Deborah Terry and Chris Malcolm, Director of the John Curtin Gallery invite you to the opening of the John Curtin Gallery’s upcoming exhibition, Refuge.

Refuge, which is part of the 2019 Perth Festival, presents two of the world’s leading audio-visual artists who give voice to the world’s refugees and immigrants in emotionally- charged new video installations.

It will feature works by Angelica Mesiti and Candice Breitz who present the complex experiences of their subjects through music, performance and the spoken word. Both artists make use of the creative cinematic medium to portray cultural diversity, with Breitz in particular challenging audiences not to ignore the message with a provocative juxtapose of storytellers – influential Hollywood stars Alec Baldwin and Julianne Moore with six real-life refugees. Mesiti in turn courts her audience through a compelling combination of joyful music and dance while firmly establishing an underlying narrative that gives gravitas to the plight of diverse communities displaced from their homelands.

The exhibition continues from 12 February – 18 April 2019

Opening hours: Monday-Friday 11am-5pm; Saturday 12 – 4 (until 3 March) and Sunday 12-4pm
