8 August 2015 @ 11:00 am - 12:00 pm
A protest and vigil by doctors, other health professionals and those working with children and vulnerable people at risk of harm (teachers, social workers, psychologists, youth workers) against the repressive recently passed Border Force Act 2015.
When: Starts 11am, Saturday 8th August
11.00 Gather and welcome to country
11.15 Speech by Dr John Paul Sanggaran
11.25 Start of silent vigil and photo opportunity with banner
11.55 Performance by Jonathan Sri ‘Tear Drops and Candle Flames’
Where: Reddacliff Place, 266 George St, Brisbane CBD.
Why: The Border Force Act 2015 imposes penalties of up to two years imprisonment for doctors and other professionals who disclose medical and other health details relating to asylum seekers or refugees in indefinite Australian government detention. This places professionals in direct conflict with their ethical and professional obligations to their patients. We believe this legislation is designed to intimidate professionals against advocating for their patients and is a further development in a sinister regime of secrecy, designed to conceal from the public the inhumane treatment of innocent people by the Australian government. Recent denials of these impacts by the Immigration Minister, Peter Dutton MP, and the Border Force Agency are totally unconvincing. As health professionals and those working with children, we protest in the strongest terms and call for amendments to this repressive Act to safeguard our right to advocate for these most vulnerable of patients without fear of sanction. Peak Health professional bodies have stated “As organisations representing Australia’s health professionals, it is inconceivable to us that the Government should seek to gag our ability to advocate strongly for our patients”.
Who: All doctors, teachers, psychologists, social workers, nurses and others who work with adult patients or children are especially invited to participate.
