Brisbane – MUSICIANS & COMMUNITY RALLY FOR REFUGEES
29 February 2020 @ 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
MUSICIANS & COMMUNITY RALLY FOR REFUGEES
Stop the cruelty
Free Kazem and other refugees
When and where:
3pm, Saturday 29th February. Outside the Kangaroo Point Central Hotel & Apartments, 721 Main St, Kangaroo Point
For nine months Iranian Kurdish metal musician Kazem Kazemi has been detained in a Brisbane Hotel along with about 80 other refugees. Brisbane musicians and community members will show their support for Kazem and the other refugees cruelty detained in a protest outside the hotel on February 29th. Kazem and the other refugees were medically evacuated from PNG and Nauru but in Australia they are not receiving the care they need. Six years of living in detention and limbo on Nauru and Manus Island has destroyed their mental health but confinement in a hotel is only exacerbating their problems. They are surrounded by guards and the only time they can leave the hotel is to use the gym at the local detention centre. On their way to and from the gym they are searched and the detention centre is a bleak highly securitized place. Kazem’s love for heavy metal music was his coping mechanism on Manus Island but now he has no access to his instruments and can only use a second hand nylon string guitar supplied by the hotel. Kazem’s story has motivated Brisbane musicians to show their solidarity. Please come and join them as they say ‘stop the cruelty’.
