Brisbane: Rally for Year 12 student, Mojgan Shamsalipoor

14 August 2015 @ 4:15 pm - 5:30 pm

Mojgan Shamsalipoor

The Queensland Teachers Union have called a rally to demand the return of Mojgan Shamsalipoor, the year 12 student forcibly removed from Brisbane to a Darwin detention centre following a radio interview where she spoke of her plight as a refugee. Her teachers and the school community have been formidable in organising a defence campaign for her. She was three months from graduating year 12.

The rally is this Friday, at 4:15 in Brisbane:  https://www.facebook.com/events/514046492080833/

It would be great to have messages of solidarity from union sub branches and reps that the teachers from Mojgan’s school can read out at the rally.

Below is a Guardian article explaining more of the details on Mojgan’s detention, and a draft resolution.

Please let me know if your sub branch (or P&C, or similar) can endorse this or a similar resolution.

In solidarity,

Draft Resolution:

Free Mojgan, Welcome Refugees

This sub branch/ organisation condemns the forcible removal of Brisbane high school student Mojgan Shamsalipoor to a detention centre in Darwin. Mojgan was three months from year 12 graduation.

Her removal was an act of intimidation and punishment, directly following Mojgan speaking to a radio national journalist about her plight as an asylum seeker. She is one of many Iranian asylum seekers who have been taken back into detention in recent months as the Federal Government negotiates with Iran to accept forcibly deported Iranian citizens. While a deal does not exist, the department is using punitive detention conditions to pressure asylum seekers into voluntary return.

We call for the immediate release of Mojgan Shamsalipoor. We call on Minister for Immigration Peter Dutton to return her to the Yeronga school community. We call for the end of mandatory detention of all asylum seekers. Students belong in schools, not detention centres. Asylum seekers need support, not punishment.

We stand in solidarity with the teachers, unionists, the school community at Yeronga High School in their campaign to free Mojgan.

Their efforts to support and defend asylum seeker students demonstrates the humane welcome that refugees deserve.

Members and supporters of the Yeronga State High School Parents and Citizens Association will be rallying from 4.15pm at Waterfront Place, 1 Eagle Street, Brisbane on Friday 14 August at an event organised by the Queensland Teachers Union, in protest of the removal of Queensland state school students generally and specifically Mojgan Shamsalipoor, from the Brisbane Immigration and Transit Accommodation Centre (BITA) to Darwin on Friday 7 August.

We will be rallying in a show of support for Mojgan and her family.

Mojgan Shamsalipoor is an inspirational and motivated Year 12 student who attends Yeronga State High School along with our own children. She is heavily involved in the school’s Arts program, and was recently a key part of a performance at the recent Women of the World Festival, a global festival supporting women, action and change.

On Friday 7 August, she was forcefully removed, without warning, from her accommodation at the Brisbane Immigration and Transit Accommodation Centre. We believe she has already been transferred to Darwin.

With only 3 months remaining of her high school education, it is unjust and inhumane to remove a young woman from her school, friends and family in this way.

We strongly believe that Mojgan should be free and be allowed to continue her education at our school and live in safety.
The Yeronga State High School Parents and Citizens Association, along with many supporters, will be wearing aqua, purple and white at Friday’s rally in a show of support for Mojgan and her family.
