Human Rights and Refugees: Gillian Triggs speaks
27 April 2016
Llewellyn Hall, ANU
William Herbert Place, Canberra
Emeritus Professor Gillian Triggs is the President of the Australian Human Rights Commission, with a five year appointment. She was Dean of the Faculty of Law and Challis Professor of International Law at the University of Sydney from 2007-12 and Director of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law from 2005-7. She is a former barrister.
As President of the Commission, her focus is on the implementation in Australian law of the human rights treaties to which Australia is a party, and to work with nations in the Asia Pacific region on practical approaches to human rights.
Triggs conducted the National Inquiry into Children in Immigration Detention, which drew significant public and media attention to the plight of refugees suffering under Australia’s detention regime. She was severely criticised for the timing of the report and showed outstanding professional courage in response. More recently, she called on LGBTI Australians to do more for LGBTI refugees and asylum seekers.
Join us to hear Triggs speak on Human Rights and Refugees, 7pm Wednesday April 27 at Llewellyn Hall, ANU.
