Malcolm Turnbull has rejected New Zealand’s repeated offer to resettle 150 refugees currently trapped in Australia’s offshore immigration regime. This starkly demonstrates that the Australian government controls what happens to the approximately 2000 people trapped in PNG and Nauru, despite its cynical claims that the PNG and Nauruan governments are responsible. It also shows that the government is intent on continuing to punish these people, including the 600 men holed up in the Manus detention centre. For a week these men have been without water, electricity, medicines or functioning toilets. Fearful for their safety and what might happen should they leave the centre because of the hostility of many in the local community towards the refugees, these men feel their only option is to stay in the centre. Yesterday, the PNG Navy prevented people bringing food to the men inside.
It has never been more critical that Australians demand our government acts to bring these people to safety immediately. This week emergency protests will continue around Canberra. At each of these actions we will raise our arms in solidarity with the men on Manus to send an unequivocal message to the government and the Labor opposition that we demand they stand up, speak out and bring these refugees to safety.
