The Multicultural Council NT – with the support of Charles Darwin University and the City of Darwin – invites international students, recently-arrived migrants and refugees, people seeking asylum, and their advocates and supporters from the community, to participate in this year’s event on Saturday 21 October 2017. It’s free and everyone is welcome to join our procession and celebrate freedom – the 2017 Walk Together flyer and route are attached.
Walk Together is a nation-wide welcoming party for everyone who calls Australia home. This event provides the opportunity for everyday Australians to join together in solidarity with our new migrants and refugees. While we’ve all come from different backgrounds, places and cultures, we are all together in the Australian family on the same journey. For more information about “Walk Together for Freedom” see: https://www.welcometoaustralia.org.au andhttps://www.walktogether.com.au
For this year’s event In Darwin, we will assemble at the Amphitheatre at the Casuarina campus of Charles Darwin University at about 4.45 pm, and then from 5.00 pm we walk together along Lakeside Drive and over the pedestrian bridge to Jingili Water Gardens for a welcome reception and barbecue from 5.30 pm.
DASSAN encourages our supporters to attend. Whilst we welcome new arrivals to Australia and walk with them we will also draw attention to the the lack of freedom for people still held on Manus and Nauru, people detained in onshore detention and the people seeking asylum who continue to live in limbo in our communities.
