Roger Ebert said this was “very nearly a perfect movie for children” but it’s just as perfect for adults too. Shot on location in some of Tehran’s poorest areas and nominated for an Academy Award in 1998, Children of Heaven follows two inventive siblings as they go on a Bicycle Thieves style traipse around the city after losing a pair of shoes. Young Iranian boy Ali (Amir Farrokh Hashemian) loses the only pair of shoes owned by his little sister Zahra (Bahare Seddiqi), and the two attempt to hide the loss from their ill Mother (Fereshte Sarabandi) and impoverished Father (Mohammad Amir Naji). Suspenseful and absorbing, this film captures the sincerity and innocence of children, and the love and friendship between a brother and sister.
