Kensington: Exhibition: Inside Manus Detention Centre
23 February 2018 - 4 March 2018
The Fox Darkroom & Gallery is proud to host an exhibition with award-winning photographer Brian Cassey. His exhibition ‘Inside Manus Detention Centre’ will be on display at Fox Gallery from 23 February – 04 March, 2018.
The images for this exhibition were taken three days after the Australian Government closed Lombrum, Manus Island detention centre in PNG and abandoned over 600 asylum seekers. Brian Cassey and journalist Rory Callinan were “smuggled” inside by boat. These are the images Brian made as the men struggled to come to terms being left without water, food, power and services.
Brian Cassey had a total of 18 minutes inside the detention centre to produce the images included in this exhibition … the images you weren’t supposed to see.
Brian Cassey has been working with various Australian and International newspapers, wires and magazines covering news, features and sport. His assignments have included … the tsunami in northern Papua New Guinea (1998), the evacuation of refugees from East Timor (1999), the coup in Fiji and the World Economic Forum riots in Melbourne (2000), the victims of the 2002 Bali bomb blasts, the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami disaster in Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar, the category 5 Cyclones Larry (2006) & Yasi (2011) that brought devastation to northern Queensland Australia … and Australia’s detention of asylum seekers on Manus Island in PNG in 2013, 2016 and 2017.
