Parramatta: Living Library: “People Just Like Us” Refugee Talks Launch

17 June 2015 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Refugee Boats

Refugees and asylum seekers are people just like us; they have family, they have dreams. The only reason they are refugees is because they were born in the wrong time, in the wrong place.

In Australia, asylum seekers and refugees have long been dehumanised by our Government and the media. They have been called ‘illegals’, ‘queue jumpers’, and ‘security threats’, in order to justify the cruel and inhumane treatment meted to them. Billions of dollars have been spent on “stop the boats”, “mandatory detention”, “offshore detention”, and the “Cambodia deal” in order to tackle what is perceived as a “refugee problem”.

In order to change this negative perception of asylum seekers and refugees, as well as the inhumane policies, “People Just Like Us”, partnering with Amnesty Parramatta and Amnesty Castle Hill Action Groups, will hold a series of talks in which we invite refugees / former refugees to share their life stories. We will also have refugee community groups to talk about their history and location specific issues, and refugee service providers to talk about their work.

Living Library: “People Just Like Us” Refugee Talks
