Melbourne: Book Launch
28 November 2015 @ 2:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Join the Refugee Action Collective for the launch of
Adbon Danton’s new book – Uncovering Forgotten Cities
Abdon Danton – author
Speaker from the Refugee Action Collective
Abdon Danton’s new book helps explain why refugees flee, why refugee camps provide no permanent security and why turning back boats is an obscenity that puts lives at risk.
Danton says that half of all refugees worldwide are children under 18 years old and that there are refugee camps with the size of cities like Zurich. Some refugee camps are more than 20 years old. They are increasingly desperate places. People have fled refugee camps in Jordan back to Syria because of hunger. In Indonesia refugees have tried to bribe their way into detention centres, rather than face starvation on the streets as they run out of funds.
In September this year Andrew Harper head of the UNHCR in Jordan said ‘Australia has not provided money to the UNHCR in Jordan for the Syria operation thus far for 2015…For an operation to be $500 million short when you are protecting four million people, it means that you can’t provide the basics. You can’t provide the basic shelter. People can’t pay the rent. They can’t pay for food. They can’t send their kids to school, so people have no choice. They can’t survive. In the last week the WFP has had to cut off food support to 229,000 people.’
Come to a forum that will discuss why Australia must be part of the solution rather than the problem, why boat turnbacks and offshore processing are so cruel, and what a genuinely humanitarian response would look like.
