In partnership with the Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) and the Immigration Museum, the Monash Migration and Inclusion Centre (MMIC) will host a documentary film event at the Immigration Museum in Melbourne to screen two short films on asylum seekers in limbo in Indonesia: ‘Respite’ and ‘Performing out of limbo’. The film screenings will be followed by a Q&A featuring:

  • Film directors, live from Jakarta
  • Mozghan Moaref, current refugee in Indonesia and founder of the Refugee and Asylum Seeker Information Centre in Jakarta
  • Asher Hirsch, senior policy officer at RCOA and PhD student at Monash University

The Q&A will be facilitated by Max Walden, a journalist focusing on Southeast Asia and Melbourne University PhD candidate.

RCOA will also launch a new briefing note on the situation for asylum seekers in limbo in Indonesia.

There are over 14,000 refugees living in limbo in Indonesia. Many came to Indonesia seeking to reach Australia or be resettled to another safe country. However, since the beginning of Australia’s Operation Sovereign Borders in 2013, and the reduction of resettlement options, many have found themselves stranded, without basic rights.

There are few solutions for refugees in Indonesia. While refugees are able to stay on a temporary basis, Indonesia does not allow refugees to settle down and build a new life. Refugees in Indonesia are not allowed to work, have only minimal healthcare or social support, and may face arbitrary detention and destitution. Many refugees face prolonged delays as they wait for resettlement, or may ultimately be pressured to return home to danger.

The two films depict the lives of refugee youth in Makassar and Jakarta, and the friendships they build with Indonesians while they hope for a better future.

We hope you can join us for these films.
