Stormy Waters – Invitation to the launch
The Victorian Council of Churches and SWAG Media invite you to the launch of the film Stormy Waters by Russell Broadbent M.P.
Victorian Council of Churches, Level 4, 306 Little Collins St. Melbourne
Thursday 11th June 2015 at 11.00 am
This is the film of a performance at Wesley Church of “Stormy Waters” – a unique, informative, moving piece of theatre with stories, songs and images. It reviews the history of migration to Australia, through to the treatment of asylum seekers today, including the atrocities on Manus Island. It challenges people’s attitudes and asks “is there a better way?” in a community which values its generosity but condones cruelty.
We believe refugee support and advocacy services will find this film useful in volunteer training, information to the community and political advocacy. DVD’s of the film will be available for sale.
A powerful piece of theatre, Stormy Waters takes the audience on a journey through two hundred years of Australia’s migration history, charting our changing attitudes to asylum seekers and asking: Is there a better way?
It was performed to great acclaim in Gippsland churches last year and Wesley Church, Melbourne, on Palm Sunday 2015. This is the film of the Melbourne performance.
SWAG Media was formed to take the theatre-based initiative to much wider audiences. Its productions contribute to community understanding of asylum seeker issues; highlight the inherent contradiction when we value kindness but condone cruelty; and call for the humane treatment of asylum seekers.
We do hope you can join us for this event.
