No Crime to Seek Asylum

How Can AEU Members say ‘Welcome Refugees’?

Thursday 30 July, 2015

4:45pm Yarraville Club 135 Stephen St, Yarraville

Teachers for Refugees

Guest Speakers:

Aran Myvalganam – Tamil Refugee Council

Pamela Curr-  Asylum Seeker Resource Centre

Refugees on Nauru suffer sexual abuse, medical neglect and mental torment. Schools forr efugee children are closing, and educators and health workers have been threatened with two years jail for revealing the horrendous conditions. Fear mongering about refugees helps Abbott deflect from cuts to health and education. But Operation Sovereign Borders itself costs more than $3.9 billion dollars a year – more than the federal government ever committed to funding Gonski. In the classroom, in the staffroom and on the streets, AEU members can play a powerful role in the campaign for justice for asylum seekers and refugees. Come to this regional meeting to discuss how we can push for ‘welcome refugees’ policies. Questions, suggestions, discussion all welcome!

Erin Aulich – AEU Vice President Secondary Sector will also speak about the next EBA for teachers and support staff
