A unique opportunity to hear refugee stories from the people who have lived them

Asylum seekers and refugees are people just like us. They should not be punished for fleeing danger and seeking our help. Seeking asylum is not a crime. However, in Australia, asylum seekers and refugees have long been dehumanised by our Government and the mainstream media. They have been called ‘illegals’, ‘queue jumpers’, and ‘security threats’, in order to justify the cruel and inhumane treatment meted to them. Billions of dollars have been spent on “stop the boats”, “mandatory detention”, “offshore detention”, and the “Cambodia deal” in order to tackle what is perceived as a “refugee problem”.

In order to change this negative perception of asylum seekers and refugees, as well as the inhumane policies, “People Just Like Us”, partnering with Refugee Council of Australia (RCOA) , will hold a series of talks in which we invite refugees / former refugees to share their life stories. We will also have refugee community groups to talk about their history and location specific issues, and refugee service providers to talk about their work.

Talk I. Hazara Afghanis/Pakistanis/Iranians & Iraqis

Time: Wednesday, 15 July 2015, 6pm for 6:30pm start

Venue: Room B, Parramatta City Council Chambers (2 Civic Place, Parramatta; 3 mins walk from Parramatta Train Station, opposite the Parramatta Library)

Speakers:
Hazara refugees: Shokufa Tahiri & Latifa Hekmat (Hazara Women for Change – Sydney), Ramazan Ali Kawish & Salar Helmandi (Kateb Hazara Association Inc-Sydney)

Yamamah Agha from Settlement Services International (SSI) and Luke Weyland from Refugee Action Coalition Sydney (RAC) will also talk about how they help asylum seekers and refugees.

The project serves as a call for unity and for positive action, encouraging Australians to improve our nation’s welcome for asylum seekers and refugees and to acknowledge the skills and energy they bring to this country.

Please join us to hear the personal journeys of local refugee community members.

Light refreshments will be provided after the talk. This is an opportunity to keep the discussion going with the panelists and other audience members.

Free event. Donations at the door.
