Last week the new Border Force Act entered into law. It imposes jail sentences of up to two years for speaking out about abuse and conditions in detention on Manus Island and Nauru. This is a clear attempt to silence criticism of the impact of offshore detention on asylum seekers. Over 40 former detention workers including doctors and health professionals have signed an open letter declaring that they were prepared to defy the laws. This forum will feature two medical staff recently on Nauru speaking about conditions there, as well as a former Manus detention worker, speaking in open defiance of the laws.
