Swan Hill: Protest: Help stop Azim being deported

16 December 2015 @ 10:00 am - 11:00 am

In Swan Hill –
10am Wed 16 Dec 2015
Help stop Azim being deported: Taliban will certainly take his life.

A SILENT PROTEST TO RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS TO THE PLIGHT OF AZIM JAN WILL BE HELD ON WEDNESDAY 16th DECEMBER 2015.

  • 10-11am near the Clock Tower, Swan Hill corner of Campbell and McCallum Street.
  • Azim will be present.
  • WHY; STOP Azim being deported by DIBT where the Taliban will certainly take his life.

Dear friends and supporters of Azim Jan

On Wednesday Azim had an appointment with Centre Link to ensure that he will, for the first time, have access to some money to live on. He also has a new Red Cross case worker, Joel Bouman, who will protect his interests and help him deal with distressing events. Joel has already proven to be an asset. On the same day, we also received word that his final appeal to the Minister had been refused. Azim fell into a deep dark hole, his despair was so great. It appears that the Minister did not even see the appeal; DIBP knocked it back before it even got to him.

At his meeting with Immigration, Azim was given a further extension of his Bridging visa for 12 days, till 22 December. In this period the Medical Officer of the Commonwealth will assess how fit Azim is to travel back to Pakistan and how much time he might need to prepare. Don’t hope for an independent assessment as the MOC  is employed/contracted by DIBP. MOC will likely  be aiming to  meet Immigration expectations. Fortunately we were able to negotiate a concession from the Department: provided he sends  letter(s)  explaining he is unfit to travel, Azim can receive information through Libby and remain less stressfully at home on 22nd.

We are down to the wire now and the pressure for refoulement will build from now on.  We hope to pursue a United Nations appeal; we also are working on other options and will share these with you when they are clearer. Any ideas that you may have, even if from left field, would be more than welcome.

It is deeply distressing to see the change in Azim who was beginning to hope and who had made tremendous improvements. At the moment, he is overwhelmed, as are we,  but we will not give up. I know we have your complete support.

Kindest regards

Janet
