Six years too long: Protest to bring Nauru & Manus refugees here
Facebook event here
19 July 2019 will be the 6th anniversary of Kevin Rudd saying that said “any asylum-seeker who arrives in Australia by boat will have no chance of being settled in Australia as refugees”.
The policy of banishing people to offshore detention indefinitely was a gift to Tony Abbott, Malcolm Turnbull and Scott Morrison.
But on the anniversary, we will tell whoever wins the federal election that there are no more excuses keep out any of the Manus and Nauru refugees and asylum seekers. They must be brought to Australia. Those already with refugee status must have it recognised here, and those still without refugee status must be permitted to apply for a visa here.
We need to kick out the Coalition. But we need to up the pressure on Labor. Bill Shorten says he wants to get refugees off Manus and Nauru. However, the US deal is effectively exhausted. Besides NZ’s offer to settle 150 per year, there is no option other than to bring them to Australia. And as if to illustrate why we need to keep fighting, one week before the election, Shorten proposed a new detention facilities in western PNG.
Over 900 women, men and children have been brought to Australia for medical reasons, despite Rudd and current PM Scott Morrison’s insistence that this would never happen – but their status remains uncertain.
We also need to end the cruel ban on the resettlement of UNHCR-recognised refugees out of Indonesia–which has left some 14,000 people in limbo, some of them for a decade or more.
The fearmongering also needs to end. PM Scott Morrison recently lied that sick refugees from Manus and Nauru might be paedophiles, rapists and murderers (for which he spent $185 million to reopen, then close, Christmas Island). Meanwhile, Morrison’s regular dog whistles against Muslims has allowed the far right to flourish.
