The End Child Detention Coalition is a vibrant and growing network that is currently made up of 25 member organisations amongst which there is a total of 150 staff, around 1,100 volunteers and approximately 120,000 supporters across all States and Territories of Australia.
As you may know, the government currently claims that there are no children in detention. We have seen this situation before in 2005, with thousands of children detained in Australian-run detention centres since then. We need a long-term solution, one that is not privy to the ebbs and flows of politics.
The End Child Detention Coalition has employed an Advocacy and Government Relations strategy, designed to attain a sustainable solution that will protect children from immigration detention across Australia once and for all. We believe this is an opportune time to influence policy on this issue, building bi-partisan support to embed into Australian legislation the positive steps the government has already taken to end child detention. Our advisors in all of the mainstream parties have indicated that now, as the issue is largely de-politicised, is the right time for a campaign towards legislative change.
