Peter Dutton has just announced his plan to give humanitarian visas to white South African farmers who haven’t even asked for them. Yet his department is refusing to provide refuge to many Tamil people who came to Australia to ask for protection from Sri Lankan security forces.
In recent days the Department of Home Affairs removed a Tamil woman, Priya, and her family in a dawn raid on their home, used cohersion to have them sign for voluntary returns, separated them, handcuffed them and put them on a plane. If not for a last-minute legal intervention, this family would have been deported to Sri Lanka. A last minute legal intervention meant that the family was given some reprieve. However, Priya reported that many other Tamil people were on that plane and were deported.
Of the situation of white South African farmers, Mr Dutton told the Daily Telegraph: “If you look at the footage and read the stories, you hear the accounts, it’s a horrific circumstance they face.”
Yet his department has refused refuge to many Tamil people who have sought Australia’s protection, and is ignoring the accounts, the reports and the evidence of ongoing systemic persecution, torture and executions of the Tamil people in Sri Lanka. Here are some of those reports:
