Wollongong rally for refugees: #kidsoffnauru

Wollongong Town Hall

The situation for the refugees on Manus Island and Nauru continues to deteriorate. A suicidal 12-year-old refugee on Nauru is suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and major depressive disorder, with doctors warning that if she isn’t removed she will die, Iranian women refugees are staging protests to draw attention to their plight, while a 22-year-old Iraqi refugee killed himself at the Yongah Hill detention centre a few weeks ago – it was his fourth attempt.

The response of the new Scott Morrison led Liberal government has been to continue the brutal policies that Morrison himself helped introduce as Immigration Minister. Policies which have been further exposed for their hypocrisy with the revelations that Peter Dutton interceded to help his rich mates bring in au pairs. Apparently there are two immigration systems in Australia: one for the elite and another for the poor fleeing war and genocide.

On top of this the Liberal government seemed posed to open up a vicious and racist debate about the levels of immigration into Australia, in a desperate attempt to show up their collapsing voting base.

The ALP have offered no serious alternative, doubling down on their commitment to continue the turn back the boats policy that has transformed Australia into a vicious and uncaring fortress of nationalism and racism.

In response to this situation the Refugee Action Collective Illawarra has called a protest march to bring attention to the plight of the refugees. Our demands are simple:

– Kids off Nauru
– Free the Refugees
– Stop the boat turn-backs

We will be starting in the square outside Wollongong Town Hall before marching to the offices of ALP representative Sharon Bird and Liberal Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells to show both the major parties that people in Wollongong reject their anti-refugee agenda.
