SUMMARY:National Letter Blitz: Where is our Australia “fair”?
DESCRIPTION: \nRAR Bendigo Letter Writing Group has launched a Letter Blitz in the lead up to Australia Day. \nAustralia Day Letter Writing Blitz\n Write to … MPs\, newspapers (city and regional)\, anyone and everyone. Let’s write hundreds of letters.\n \nAddresses for Senators and MPs – http://bit.ly/2h7EhFc \n\nWe are asking you to consider Australian values\, and the many ways the government is devaluing us.\nWe are losing the right to transparent government\, to fair trial\, to nobody being above the law\, etc.\nWe are being deliberately divided\, citizen is pitted against citizen.\nThe vulnerable members of our communities are being trampled on\, manipulated.\nMinorities are being scapegoated. So … … \n\n• We are asking you to push back.\n• We are asking you to write about these issues.\n• We are asking you to target capital city newspapers\, (especially the Murdoch press\, and also the regional papers.) \nEspecially\, we are asking you to consider the plight of refugees and people seeking asylum. \n====================================\nWhere is our Australia “fair”? \nWhat is happening to our Australian values?\n====================================\nThis Australia Day …\nThinking about indigenous dispossession?\nGood.\n———\nAlso\, please …\nThink about people who are imprisoned\, yet have done nothing wrong\, committed no crime\, and who are even denied a trial\, fair or otherwise. \n“In history’s page\, let every stage advance Australia fair.” \nThe tune to those words we sing was written by Tommy Tycho\, a Jewish refugee who came to Australia after experiencing\, as a 15-year-old boy\, the horrors of a forced labour camp during WW2. \nTommy Tycho AM MBE was Musical Director at the Seven Network for 15 years\, was involved in nine Royal Command Performances\, and conducted all the ABC symphony orchestras\nHe might have been born in Hungry\, but the multi-talented pianist\, conductor\, composer\, arranger … and former refugee … died in 2013\, in Randwick\, Sydney. Australia gave him a chance to shine\, to contribute. \n\n“with courage let us all combine to advance Australia Fair”\nIt’s time for all good people to stand up\n——————————————————————————– \nWho am I talking about?\n• We call them refugees and people seeking asylum.\n• Our government calls them boat people\, takes away their name\, gives them a number … There is something wrong when a 6yr old says her name is “EZB037”- Thomas Albrecht\, UNHCR\n• … and then the government locks these people up\, and/or transports them to an offshore island.\n \nBoat people are NOT criminals who need locking up.\n• They are the victims.\n• Our government KNOWS they are victims\, that they are fleeing danger\, fleeing for their lives. That’s why they call them refugees. That’s why they don’t send them back as soon as they arrive.\n• Our government KNOWS these people are genuine.\n• They are refugees.\n \nHow does Australia “help” these people when they ask us for protection\, for safety?\n• The Australian government locks them in detention centres\, i.e. prisons\, without trial – at least one man has now been imprisoned for 8 years without charge\, without recourse to a trial.\n• The Australian government locks people up onshore and off-shore\, without trial\,\n• Then\, when our government was found to be acting unlawfully off-shore\, it opened the gates … but left people trapped\, stranded\, abandoned on Manus and Nauru. • NB. When you cannot leave an island\, the island itself becomes the prison.\n• 2 centuries ago we had another open-air island prison. It was called Van Diemen’s Land.\n \nAustralia Day Letter Writing Blitz\nWrite to … MPs\, newspapers (city and regional)\, anyone and everyone. Let’s write hundreds of letters.\n \nAddresses for Senators and MPs – http://bit.ly/2h7EhFc \n

SUMMARY:Sydney: Exhibition: All We Can't See
DESCRIPTION: \nIn August 2016\, the Guardian published The Nauru Files\, leaked incident reports written by staff in Australia’s detention centre on Nauru between 2013 and 2015. \nThese files detail 2\,116 individual cases of assault\, sexual abuse\, self-harm\, child abuse and abhorrent living conditions endured by asylum seekers in the care of the Australian Government. Despite the harrowing nature of the files\, the centre continues to operate as before – the conditions remain and the abuse is ongoing. \nIn the total absence of media access to the island\, our objective is to illustrate these stories through creative expression\, using art to shed light on all we can’t see. \nPlease join us for an exhibition of 30 leading Australian artists illustrating the Nauru Files. The exhibition will be held in February 2018 at The Yellow House in Sydney. \nHosted by – \n\nYellow House\, Sydney\nHuman Rights Watch.\nAll We Can’t See\n\n

SUMMARY:Fremantle: RRAN Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Freo Refugee Rights Action Network Meetings\n\nFebruary 6 @ 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm\n\nRefugee Rights Action Network (RRAN) is a political activist group. \nWe oppose mandatory detention and believe that asylum seekers should be welcomed into the community. It is no crime to seek asylum\, and the fact that people seeking our protection are being detained indefinitely\, without charge or trial is a fundamental violation of human rights. \nWe stand in solidarity with asylum seekers in their struggle for justice. We are openly critical of the Australian government for its inhumane treatment of asylum seekers and we oppose racism and xenophobia\, which drive dehumanising policies that destroy lives. Let’s give refuge to refugees. \nFREO RRAN meets: \n\nEvery 1st and 3rd Tuesday 6:00pm\, reception room behind Freo Town Hall\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Gosford: Life on Manus
DESCRIPTION:The Central Coast for Social Justice community and the Anglican Parish of Gosford invite you to:\n‘Life On Manus’\nPresented by guest Speaker Anne Moon \n10.30 – Morning Tea\n11.00 – Talk and Slide show \n \nIn her presentation ‘Life on Manus’\, Anne talks about:\n• The conditions under which the men have been living for the past 5 years on Manus\n• Some individual stories of where they are from\, why they fled and how they have coped\n•Update on current conditions since transfer to new accommodation\nThe presentation includes personal photos and movies direct from the men and from Anne’s personal collection from her 3 visits to Manus. \nEntry and Morning Tea by Donation – all funds go to a legal fund to support Manus men \nAbout Anne:\nAnne has spent decades as a volunteer helping various vulnerable people all over the world. For almost 20 years she lived overseas volunteering in places like Ecuador\, the Amazon\, and Sumatra working in orphanages and teaching English.\nHer involvement with refugees in offshore detention began when she saw asylum seekers being forced into buses and sent to remote islands\, and as the stories emerged about people with life-threatening diseases\, epilepsy\, diabetes\, and heart disease being denied their medications. This prompted her to become active in calling for offshore detention to stop but it soon became clear that writing emails\, calling and visiting politicians’ offices was not enough. \nAnne accepted her first Facebook friend request from an asylum seeker on Manus in 2014 and spoke with this person every day for 5 months before accepting another. In 2015 Anne started supporting men who were sick and not receiving proper medical attention by liaising with organisations such as Doctors for Refugees and the AMA. Due to her intervention there have been 4 men sent to Australia for treatment and many others to Port Moresby. Anne now has many cases with different agencies supporting their medical needs which includes assembling and copying the necessary documentation\, and collating their medical files. Over the last 18 months she has also liaised with numerous lawyers to help assemble signatures and documentation for various court cases. She has just returned from her third visit to Manus to provide support to the men. \nThis speaking tour aims to raise awareness of the crisis on Manus\, and also the plight of those men denied refugee status. Funds raised will go to this legal fund:\nhttps://www.chuffed.org/project/manus-legal-fund \n

SUMMARY:Melbourne: Grandmothers at the Art Gallery
DESCRIPTION:We are joining in with a  World Vision event.\n \nGrandmothers and Friends of Grandmothers\, come in purple to the water wall at the entrance to the Victorian National Gallery\, St Kilda Road. BRING YOUR CAMERAS\n\nMeet  (wearing purple scarves ) \nWhen? 10.30  a.m  Tuesday 13th February \nWhere?  At the entrance to the National Gallery of Victoria in St Kilda Road  by the water wall.  \nSpend  one and a half hours at the amazing exhibition depicting refugees (as part of the Triennial exhibition on the third floor). \nDETAILS: \nFirst we will proceed to the third floor of the gallery  (after cloaking our back packs with picnics in them). On the third floor we will see: \nThe refugee exhibition at the Gallery as part of the  Melbourne Triennial \nSee the extraordinary exhibitions. See the arresting video work “Incoming “of Richard Mosse\, which includes work narrated by Iranian refugee Behrouz Boochani imprisoned on Manus. His indictment of the cruelty experienced there is heart shattering. \nDon’t miss the poignant painting by Ben Quilty\, or the installation by Candice Breitz – renamed “Wilson Must Go” for this exhibition. \nTHEN THE WALK at  12 noon. Be at the entrance to the Gallery again at 12 noon.  Bring a placard if you have one. We’ll organize some cut-out children and two banners. We will walk together  (only 10 minutes) across Princes Bridge to St Paul’s. \nJoin the installation: We join the World Vision ceremony Bears on Stairs on the steps of St Paul’s.  If you can bring a teddy bear (in good condition) to donate\, place it on the steps of St Paul’s as part of the Bears on Stairs installation.  Listen to Tim Costello. \nWalk back to the gallery and regroup for the picnic afterwards   \nBring a picnic lunch.  We’ll regroup at the gallery after the ceremony at St Paul’s. (We estimate we’ll be back at the gallery by around 1.15pm).  We can leave backpacks with picnics in them at the Gallery cloakroom and retrieve them when we arrive back at the gallery. Gallery officials will facilitate our entry with picnics to the sculpture garden at the back where seating is available. \n What will happen to the teddy bears? \nThe bears will be donated to ASRC to distribute to refugee children. \nSo many refugee children are suffering and over 150 refugee and asylum seeker children are still marooned on Nauru. Our participation on Tuesday draws attention to the unconscionable harm being done to children — as well as to the cruelty and injustice to men\, women and children whose only crime was to seek our help. \nClare Pam and Helen for the Grandmothers \n

His exhibition ‘Inside Manus Detention Centre’ will be on display at Fox Gallery from 23 February – 04 March\, 2018. \nThe images for this exhibition were taken three days after the Australian Government closed Lombrum\, Manus Island detention centre in PNG and abandoned over 600 asylum seekers. Brian Cassey and journalist Rory Callinan were “smuggled” inside by boat. SUMMARY:Sydney-Canberra: Walk for Refugee
DESCRIPTION:The Refugee Regatta 2018 involves a series of events running from Feb 24-March 11 2018. We aim to raise awareness of the plight of refugees and asylum seekers languishing in offshore detention in Manus and Nauru and send a message to the Australian Government that the majority of Australians stand for the closure of those centres. We believe that Australia must ensure that we provide for our own safety without jeopardising people who have turned to us for help. The current situation in these centres is untenable and we must find workable solutions which do not mistreat vulnerable people\, do not stem from fear and which more accurately reflect the compassionate welcoming Australia we know and love.  \n \nThe Regatta began in 2017 with a walk from Adelaide to Canberra. It is non political\, and is organised by a group of ordinary Australians from Adelaide: Adam Richards\, a criminal lawyer who walks with his 14 year old son Ned and their support/admin team comprising lawyers\, human service workers and an IT specialist. We are delighted to have the support of the Asylum Seekers Resource Centre (ASRC) and Amnesty International. \nThis walk is funded entirely by donation and sponsorship. Any extra monies raised once costs are covered goes to “Gifts for Manus and Nauru” providing school supplies and day to day living essentials for those in the centres.  \n \n
