Listening to Refugees

On this page we will publish podcasts, stories and events where refugees and people seeking asylum speak to us directly.

Refugee Solidarity Meanjin have published a story from one of the refugees imprisoned in the Kangaroo Point Hotel, awaiting medical treatment. Amin’s story is his experience of detention under the Australian Government’s policies.  It’s painful reading but it is what is happening now.

There have been several interesting Zoom sessions held in the past few months where we have been able to hear directly from refugees.  We have links to some of these here.

As part of an extended Refugee Week, the Blue Mountains Refugee Support Group arranged for an interview with Esmat, a refugee from Afghanistan.  This interview was held with Phil Voysey of Cultural Connexions

It’s a fascinating story of how this young man made the decision to leave his home and make the journey to Australia.  You can hear this story and meet Esmat, on this Zoom recording.   You will need to use a passcode:  InConversation1@.  Settle in for an hour!

On September 16, Refugee Voices organized an on-line event with  Grace WilliamsBehrouz BoochaniJulian Burnside , Moz, Sarah and Maya Ghassil from Refugees on Air – deliberating on the future of Australia’s refugee movement.  It was a great session – if you missed it, you can watch it on the recording here.

Please send us any stories that you have, so we can publish them here.  E:
