The offshore processing of asylum seekers, previously dubbed the ‘Pacific solution’, has stopped the boats, argue proponents of the policy. But the approach remains contentious. Offshore processing and detention recommenced in 2012. Since then, there have been riots, a murder, widespread self harm by detainees, as well as a PNG court ruling that detention on Manus Island is unlawful. Is offshore processing working? What is life is like behind the wire on Manus Island and Nauru?
