RAR21-070 Saving Costs – Entails Accepting Responsibility Generic Letter to MPs 8 March

Senator email addresses by State and Party Feb 2021

**************** INSTRUCTIONS HERE *************************

This month we are asking you to send this letter to all your State or Territory Senators and to your local MP.

The key points we are making are:

  • Thankfully that people being released from detention into the community, however concern that there are many who still need expert health care and this has not been addressed.
  • In the first three weeks they receive – accommodation, a small amount of money for living expenses, access to Medicare, public transport assistance and the right to work.
  •  After that they only have access to Medicare (bulk bill only) and work rights. They are on a Bridging Visa E that has to be renewed every 6 months. They have no access to education, nowhere to live, no money for food/rent and are excluded from Jobseeker. They need jobs and many are unable to work. Even those who can work will find it extremely difficult to find this.
  • Minister Dutton says that he’s releasing detainees to save costs, but is actually eliminating any spending on these released detainees. The result for many will be homelessness and starvation as the charities are overstretched with COVID-19.
  • In short, the Government is knowingly and deliberately inflicting potentially irreparable damage on a cohort of already fragile people because of their long term detention.
  • This lack of ongoing support does not meet Australia’s obligation, as signatories to the 1951 Refugee Convention, to treat refugees in the same manner as Australian nationals with regard to public relief and social security.
  • We ask our local MP and all State/Senators to approach the Government and ask it to assume responsibility by ensuring adequate support is made available to these people. We suggest that the previous Status Resolution Support Services payment (SRSS), similar to Jobseeker be reinstated as this will only cost a fraction of detention costs per year.
