Central Victorian Refugee Support Network – CVRSN

The CVRSN has 2 main functions:

  1. Sharing of information, etc. between local RAR groups
  2. To initiating local projects … for example …

Wannon Electorate Project – 2014
National RAR Network – 2014-2017
Accommodation & Employment Working Group – 2015-2017
Co-ordinate regional campaigns 2018

CVRSN meets every two months in Castlemaine to share information between the Rural Australians for Refugee groups in the Ballarat, Bendigo, Castlemaine, Daylesford, Maryborough and Macedon Ranges.
(Due to COVID – currently meeting on Zoom)

The networking between these groups allows comprehensive and effective regional projects to be undertaken.

In 2018, one of many issues was the #KidsOffNauru campaign

In Daylesford, members of Christ Church and the Daylesford and District Rural Australians for Refugees (RAR) group worked collaboratively to raise awareness of the issue among widespread reports of children with serious health issues, by ringing their church bell once for every child remaining in offshore detention until they are all brought on to Australian soil.

Bendigo Grandmothers and RAR lead a “Make a Noise Day” procession to draw attention to the plight of seriously ill children detained on Nauru.

Ballarat RAR kicked off the Campaign when 30 people braved Ballarat’s cold 7 degrees winters day to attend rally. The rally started at Catherine King’s office and at 11.30am   proceeded to Queen Victoria Square in front of the Town Hall  spending 45 minutes being very visible to traffic and pedestrians.

And in 2018 Macedon Ranges Shire became
a Refugee Welcome Zone

Maryborough RAR were bitterly disappointed with the Central Goldfields Shire council’s decision to reject a call to become a Refugee Welcome Zone but have vowed to continue their fight for change.
