The growth of Healesville RAR
At a ‘Writers and Rhythm’ event in 2016, a well known journalist, Iain Gillespie spoke about the issues facing people seeking asylum and refugees in Australian detention. Iain asked if there was interest in establishing a RAR group in Healesville. At the initial meeting in September 2016, RAR Healesville was established. Since then we have held a number of public awareness events – speakers, music, vigils, and films – which have been well supported by community.
The Healesville Uniting Church has continued to support us, providing a welcoming venue for our committee meetings and most community events. Our founder, Iain has continued to share his passion and enthusiasm and has busked regularly at St Andrews Market raising considerable funds which have enabled us to assist with provision of:
- Regular phone recharge costs for refugees in detention
- Gifts for Manus and Nauru
- iPads for refugee and asylum seeker families due to Covid 19
- Assistance with emergency call-outs for funding for legal expenses
- Rohingya refugee children’s educational opportunities in Bangladesh
We have now produced a CD called Homespun which retails for $20 plus postage (nominally $5). If you or your members would like to buy one or some to support our work, that would be awesome.
